Disability Awareness and Access Training for the Arts

Event date:
12 December 2006

There are two kinds of people in the world: people with a disability and those not yet with a disability.

Judy Heumann, Advisor Disability and Development The World Bank.

Accessible Arts provide a half day TAFE accredited module designed for individuals working in the arts and arts organisations.

All of us will experience a disability at some point in our lives, whether temporary or permanent. People with disabilities comprise approximately 20% of the Australian population (3.6 million) and therefore comprise a significant clientele group in their own right.

Apart from the legal obligation to ensure equal access to all goods, services and venues (Disability Discrimination Act,1992), the training provided by Accessible Arts increases awareness of the barriers for people with disabilities in accessing the arts and provides strategies to overcome them. As a result of attending the course staff will feel a greater level of confidence when dealing with access issues for people with disabilities.

This course is suitable for all staff at all levels. We have trained a range of people from security and front of house staff to individual artists and arts administrators and managers.

Katy Mercer, Training Officer, Accessible Arts.

This is what some of the participants said about the course:

The course was excellent and well worth the long drive. I found the information, group work and discussions excellent.

Very good. Stimulating and excellent discussions.'

The training module developed by TAFE NSW in association with Accessible Arts provides all participants with a TAFE transcript on completion of the training. Accessible Arts has provided training for the Sydney Opera House, Museums and Galleries Foundation, Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney Theatre Company, Historic Houses Trust and Museum of Contemporary Art.

Dates for upcoming TAFE accredited courses in Sydney are 14th November and 12th December 2006 and in Newcastle on 20th November. Cost $55 (inc GST) includes handbook/afternoon tea and TAFE enrolment and transcript.

ACCESSIBLE ARTS SPECIAL OFFER: October 23rd discount rate of $35 for registered organizers of International Day of People With Disability (IDPWD) arts events.
