Kyeema Disability Week Celebrations

Barb Enscoe

This years celebrations were a great success, with input from representatives from various groups. These were Rural Access, Glenelg Shire Council, Kyeema, Special Developmental School and the YMCA.

Friday 25th November, saw a Junior Disco held at the YMCA. Music was provided by students of the S.D.S., and this event led onto this group of students being booked to play at the next Blue Light Disco. All present had a great time.

Saturday 26th November, was the inaugural event, for the "Wild Westerlies" with their Danceparty, held at the Fawthrop Centre in Hood Street. Many local people attended, and they were all pleased to welcome groups from Hamilton and Mt. Gambier. It was an opportunity to meet new people and to form contacts for our next social events. The music was from a live band, and a DJ to charge of the night. All who attended voted for more of the same.

Wednesday 30th November, saw our Beachparty at the Yacht Club, and this was a great day. To begin with, there was music, badge making, (courtesy of the S.D.S.) face painting, sand sculpturing, volleyball, cricket, egg and spoon races. And if that wasn't enough we also had a BBQ provided and cooked by the Lions Club, Fruit Punch and salads funded by Safeway, and St John's Ambulance and the State Emergency Services provided displays. A Decorated Hat Competition was held with the prize donated by Myra Bourke, Glenelg Shire Council. A big thanks to the Kyeema cooking group for the great salads and the famous Kyeema lentil burgers. This day also witnessed the best face painters at work. They created living works of art, that demanded many cameras be brought out.

Friday 2ndDecember. Party with the Ponies in Hamilton. What an end to an exciting week this was. A bus and car of Clients, and volunteer support workers travelled to Hamilton, to have lunch, and cheer the Kyeema horse in the feature race of the day. They must have cheered very loudly, because our horse won the race, and our group was presented with a cheque for $1,000. What a day!!!! Now we need all of you to think about what the money can be put towards, or what can be purchased for you as a group.

A big thank you to all of the Support Staff and Kyeema staff who put in many hours of volunteer work, to ensure that these activities were successful. We could not have done any of the above without you.

Open Garden Fund Raiser.

Sunday 27thNovember, saw the Open Garden Fundraiser take place, with 7 beautiful gardens open for visitors. This event was organised by Gwen Davis, and she did most of the initial organising of this great event. Gwen, along with her band of volunteers (again volunteers at work), manned the gardens, sold tickets, encouraged, smiled and beat off flies all day. But what a day this was. A grand total of $1200 was raised for the Community Based Programs. Great effort Gwen.
