On 9 April 1997 experienced mountain climber Warren Macdonald became caught beneath a one-ton slab of rock in a freak rock fall whilst climbing Mt Bowen. He remained trapped for two days until rescuers could locate and free him. As a result of the accident Macdonald had both legs amputated above the knee.
Ten months later, he climbed Tasmania's Cradle Mountain using a specially built wheelchair and has been climbing ever since. Warren's expeditions have taken him around the globe.
In February 9th 2003, Warren and Hamisi Lugonda, a 19 year old Tanzanian farmer born with no arms, became the first double amputee team to climb to the 5,895m summit of Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, East Africa. Hamisi and Warren took just 18 days to reach the summit via the mountains arduous Umbwe and Arrow Glacier routes before descending via the Mweka route.

Whenever possible, you should use a chair when talking with a person in wheelchair for more than a few minutes. Placing yourself at another person's level allows for direct eye contact, making it easier to hold a conversation, as well as being courteous.

Chronic illness and terminal illness are not the same. A chronic is one that lasts a long time, recurs often and is constantly present or resists all efforts to cure it. A terminal illness is one that ultimately leads to death.

- What is a TTY?
This device 'rings' via flashing a light or the more recent, vibrating wrist band that resembles a watch. The TTY consists of a keyboard, which hold somewhere from 20 to 30 character keys, a display screen, and a modem. The letters that the TTY user types into the machine are turned into electrical signals that can travel over regular telephone lines. When the signals reach their destination (in this case another TTY) they are converted back into letters which appear on a display screen, are printed out on paper or both. Some of the newer TTYs are even equipped with answering machines.
