Focus on Carers Conference: Family Carers - The Next Generation Next Generation Memorial Drive, Adelaide

Tuesday 18 October 2005

The conference is the key event for National Carers Week 2005 in South Australia. The conference aims to provide a forum for Carers, service providers, professionals and the government to consider how the community, agencies and organisations can be more responsive to carers.

The conference will focus on family Carers within the context of the State Government's promised Whole of Government Carers Policy and provides a timely opportunity to facilitate the growing awareness of the role of Carers as key partners in the delivery of care in our community.

This is an event that encourages forward thinking. The recent NATSEM Report (2004) identified the growing demands that will be placed on future Carers. The keynote address by Professor Saul Becker, a world expert on young Carer issues, will serve to highlight the importance of recognising young Carers and the need for policy and practice development in this area.

The program brings to you a selection of current and leading edge work that is occurring at the state, national and international level.

Invites you to a one-day workshop presented by Dr Erik Leipoldt

Exploring disability experience: A lens on sustainable living

Disability is often viewed as a "fate worse than death". However, those who live with impairment, their family members, and allies often find that the experience of disability is not entirely negative but rather offers transformative opportunities.

This workshop will examine the lived experience of disability - and challenge the idea that disability is summed up by "deficit" and "difference". Rather Erik will argue that disability is an integral part of the human condition because all human beings inevitably face vulnerability, dependence and limitation. People with disability, who have often faced these realities more directly than others, therefore, offer insights which have significant social value.

These insights - and particularly practical wisdom about the experience of interdependence - will form the basis for workshop discussion.

Community Pharmacy Under Threat

Posted: September 2, 2005

Community pharmacy in the ACT is under threat from the giant retailer, Woolworths, who has made clear its intention to open pharmacies in supermarkets. Other retail chains have indicated that they will follow suit if Woolworths is successful.

Currently pharmacy legislation in the ACT prohibits the establishment of pharmacies in supermarkets, but all governments, including in the ACT, are under pressure from Woolworths to change this.

A formal government review of pharmacy services currently being conducted in the ACT provides an opportunity for Woolworths to put pressure on the Government.

Many in the community have expressed their opposition to pharmacies in supermarkets, not only because of the control it gives the big retailers over a wide range of products but also because of the social impacts of such market domination. In fact in 2004, the Guild was able to present to the ACT Parliament a petition with the signatures of 45,000 consumers objecting to pharmacies in supermarkets.

Community pharmacies today do much more than dispense medication.

They community has lost access to many specialist services over recent years - the butcher, the greengrocer, even the small suburban haberdashery stores. Will community pharmacy be next?

Woolworths argues that it will be able to save consumers money. But the price of 70% of items sold in pharmacies is set by the Federal Government.

Many people say the local pharmacy holds the community together, its presence helping to draw business to other local shops, providing a support network for welfare services in suburban areas and helping other community organisations to spread health promotion messages.

Community pharmacy now needs the active support of the community in order to ensure that the current health care model of locally-based pharmacies can remain in the ACT.

Please write to us and show your support for Community Pharmacy.

MUSIC WORKS

Posted: August 17, 2005

Let me draw your attention to the next Music Works at the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel, 59 Port Rd, Hindmarsh South Australia on Tuesday September 6th from 10:30am to 2:30pm.

This next dynamic day gig features a truly outstanding line up of musicians & performers.

Barry & Jan McAskill: Entertainers Extraordinaire!

Nata: Accomplished classical pianist

Caliente: Brazilian guitar & percussion

Don't miss this exquisite show!

Last month's music kept the dance floor moving, complimented by some beautiful piano playing by Chris Combe.

I've had a bit of feedback that for some people the volume was too high. I always appreciate constructive feedback so we can continue to fine tune this event. The next gig will be gentler, but just as dancy.

So make sure it's in your diaries and programs, & continue to spread the good word.

Kind regards

Contracts Exchanged at last!

Posted: August 17, 2005

After a long process and strong support from local residents, the old Collaroy Hospital Site in Beach Road will now be used for the purpose that George Sargood intended when he donated the land to the community back in 1921.

Securing the land for the purpose of building a state of the art facility for newly spinal injured people is the result of a 5 year partnership between Spinal Cord Injuries Australia and the Collaroy Community Group.

Mr Bob Loader, Chairman of the Collaroy Community Group said "It has taken almost fourteen years of struggle, but we can take heart now that this site will be protected into the future, and will return to its intended role of serving the needs of disadvantaged people. Newly elected Premier Iemma has said that people with disabilities are one of his main priorities. Helping us to build this facility will make a great start."

"It's so exciting that we can now commence the next stage of our plans to build our new rehabilitation Facility. The Facility is so desperately needed in order to get people out of hospital and back into our community" SCI Australia Chief Executive, Greg Bergan said.

The facility will provide people with spinal cord injuries the opportunity to develop independent living skills so they can return home physically, mentally and emotionally prepared to get on with life after such a traumatic injury. The facility will also provide respite care for those people already living in the community.

The Northern Beaches Community has been helping Spinal Cord Injuries Australia to raise funds for the new Rehabilitation Facility and have raised over $300,000 so far. The total project is expected to cost over $5 million.

Local resident and Appeal Chair, Rod Macqueen said "It has been quite special to see the local community get right behind this project. A lot of hard work has been put in by many people but the end result is going to be a significant benefit to many of those suffering spinal injuries."

A site office has been set up in shop 3/1030 -1034 Pittwater Rd Collaroy. The office will be open in early October and community members are invited to drop in and find out more about the project.

There will also be an Open Day on the site itself, planned for November.

Working Carers Support Gateway
Helping you juggle work and care

People who juggle paid work with caring for a relative or friend in need of help because they are ill, frail or have a disability are now able to get useful, relevant information and support via a new Internet site.

The 'Working Carers Support Gateway' website www.workingcarers.org.au is now online for New South Wales carers generally, and low-income and isolated carers in particular, who have both caring and workplace responsibilities.

Developed by the Disability & Aged Information Service (DAISI), the website provides direct information support state-wide for busy working carers. The vision for the Gateway project is that working carers are valued, respected and supported to achieve balance in their work and home life. The project is funded by NSW Health's Carers Unit.

Who is a working carer?

Working carers are defined as those who do caring work for two or more hours per week and also hold down casual, part-time or full-time paid work, as distinct from 'at-home' carers.

Given that the number of people who combine paid work and caring is expected to rise, the project is timely. It provides a one-stop-shop of practical information that busy working carers can access via the Gateway website 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The website focuses heavily on industrial relations advocacy and financial planning advice. It contains lists of services for working carers; information - including medical information; fact sheets; advice and links. Working carers are able to subscribe free to a weekly electronic newsletter, join an online discussion group for added support, and contribute stories that reflect on their experiences with employers, services and families.

Send your submissions, comments or queries to the Working Carers Support Gateway team at info@workingcarers.org.au.

WALK A MILE IN MY SHOES ™

Posted: June 27, 2005

A National Day of Action by Unpaid Family Carers
Tuesday 13th September 2005

Background

On March 28th 2005 ABC's Four Corners broadcast "The Hidden Army", a documentary detailing the lives of unpaid family carers in Australia. Over 900,000 people throughout Australia viewed this program on the night and ABC research indicated that those who tuned in stayed tuned in. An online Four Corners forum was held following the broadcast and during that forum carers suggested a "day of action" by carers was needed. It was suggested that the action day should be called Old Shoe Day with an invitation extended to Members of Parliament and policy makers to "Walk a Mile in My Shoes" in order to create awareness of the issues that confront unpaid family carers on a daily basis, and in order to initiate change. It should also be noted that many people who interacted on the post broadcast forum were not family carers and they expressed their dismay/disgust at the way unpaid family carers are treated by governments generally.

There were 925 postings to the forum and many e-mail opinions in subsequent mailings. The ABC Four Corners Program is still receiving calls regarding "The Hidden Army". This call for a National Day of Action comes from the "grass roots" - unpaid family carers who are angry at their circumstances and angry that their voice is not being heard or their concerns heeded. Consequently, unpaid family carers from Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales, Western Australia and South Australia have collaborated to get the ball rolling on a National Day of Action.

The Plan of Action

Carer solidarity, strength of numbers, vocality and visibility are the aims of the action day. The central focus of action will take place in Canberra. Based on advice and careful research, that included checking the sitting dates for both houses of the Federal Parliament, Tuesday September 13th will be the day for action. This allows three months prior notice for caring families who wish to make their way to Canberra.

Family carers and their supporters will gather on the lawns directly behind Old Parliament House by 10am. Speakers will address the rally and all Federal politicians will be issued with an invitation to listen to, meet and speak with carers at this rally. All Federal politicians will be presented with the symbol for this rally - a pair of old, worn out shoes - and asked to "walk a mile in my shoes"™ by carers. It is also proposed to present the Federal Parliament with a National Carers Service Register detailing the years spent in the unpaid care role by individual carers and the amount of money they have saved the Australian community. These will be collated in books of 100 with the following on the cover for example:

This book contains the details of 100 unpaid family carers who have each provided 25 years of unpaid care/ support. This equates to 2500 years of unpaid care/support service provided. At the very conservative estimated cost (based on average cost for supported accommodation provided by paid service providers) of $50,000/year, the total savings generated by these unpaid family carers is $12,500,000.

It will be requested that all documents be tabled and entered into Hansard for posterity. It is recommended that family carers who can make their way to Canberra set up appointments with their local Federal representatives before or after the rally on the Parliamentary lawns in order to personalize the issues faced by family carers. Family carers who cannot make it to Canberra, due to costs, distance or the logistical nightmare that carers face in organising substitute supports for family members, are encouraged to take similar action at their State/ Territory Parliament House - on the same day at the same time.

Carers living in rural/remote areas may also wish to take action via post, e-mail, telephone or fax. We do ask though that if you can, please post a tagged pair of your old shoes to your elected representative at Parliament House in Canberra with a request that they place your shoes in your absence. This background information will accompany flyers and be distributed widely through to service provider networks, Carer groups/associations and the Commonwealth Carer Respite Centres. Service provider, association and brokerage outlets are encouraged to show their support for family carers by adopting a special campaign to "Send a Carer to Canberra". Family carers are encouraged to approach both service providers and Carer Respite Centres for the provision of substitute supports for family members to enable family carers to attend the rally.

The Music Works is a new "dynamic day gig" held on the first Tuesday of each month between 10:30am & 2:30pm at the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel, 59 Port Road Hindmarsh.

This monthly event is designed to attract people that have time during the day who would enjoy live music performance, dancing, sing a long sessions, & a vibrant friendly community, all at very low cost.

This is a disability led event that will attract people from the whole community, muso's, students, unemployed, pensioners etc.

It will have an informal party atmosphere, & you'll find it's just what you need to brighten up your life & spirit.

The Music Works entirely depends on the entrance fee to resource it, so we need a good crowd of people to make it work. So why don't you contribute to Adelaide's cultural diversity by spreading the word, & by bringing a couple of friends along on the day.

I guarantee you will be back for more, so enter the next Music Works gig into your diary right now.

Admission is $5. Support workers for people with disabilities get free admission.

See you there!

Dramatic Realisations Theatre Co

Dramatic Realisations is a new mixed ability theatre company aiming to break new ground in showcasing the talent of committed and passionate performing artists (who may happen to have a disability).

Dramatic Realisations is not a disability project, it is an inclusive theatre company aiming to produce work of a high artistic standard.

Dramatic Realisations is a 'mixed ability' theatre company, encouraging everyone to participate in a meaningful way. The only requirement: a passion for theatre.

The theatre company will be launched with a debut performance at this year's Canberra Disability Arts Festival in December.

MEDIA RELEASE - Funding available for disabilities e-learning

Posted: May 19, 2005

Organisations interested in undertaking a trial project of e-learning for people with disabilities, should submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) by noon, Eastern Standard Time (EST), Friday 10 June 2005.

The trials are being run by the 2005 Australian Flexible Learning Framework's (2005 Framework) E-learning for Target Learner Groups Project.

The 2005 Framework is a one-year, AUD$15 million national strategy collaboratively funded by the Australian Government and all States and Territories. It provides the vocational education and training (VET) system with e-learning skills, development opportunities, resources and support.

The Project aims to show which e-learning techniques are best suited to people with disabilities, develop case studies that identify how these students may be supported and where more work needs to be done.

The E-learning for Target Learner Group's Project will be looking for up to six organisations to conduct trial projects from July. Each organisation will receive up to AUD$25,000 for their project.

Anyone interested in submitting an EOI can download the documentation from http://www.flexiblelearning.net.au/targetlearners. Applications close at noon, EST, Friday 10 June 2005.

National Best Practice in Disability Conference

Posted: April 8, 2005

The National Best Practice in Disability Conference is being held in Armidale NSW from 29 November to 1 December 2005. Challenge Armidale is very excited to be involved in the organisation of this conference in conjunction with the University of New England. With the impact of recent funding cuts and budgetary considerations for all disability service sectors, we feel this conference is a wonderful opportunity to change the focus back onto the innovative and excellent services currently being provided to people with disabilities across Australia.

This conference specifically focuses on Vision and Practice, highlighting and celebrating the very best that disability services in Australia and beyond have to offer. The conference will feature presentations, workshops and posters on leading practice in the areas of governance; management practice; ageing and disability; health and well-being; employment services for people with a disability; accommodation and day programs; children's services, and new developments in behaviour management and therapies. This conference is not designed to be a purely academic exercise, with the emphasis to be upon the leading practice programs currently being provided by services across Australia.

This conference will provide a great opportunity to celebrate the pioneering work that many services are doing, and to share these success stories with other providers. A direct link to the conference Web-site is as follows :www.une.edu.au/campus/confco/bpdc2005.

If you have any questions or queries please do not hesitate to either contact Challenge Armidale's General Manager Kevin Mead on kmead@challenge-armidale.org.au or the UNE Conference Company at confco@metz.une.edu.au. We would be grateful if you could also pass this information onto any other individuals or organisations that you feel would also be interested in attending, presenting or demonstrating. If you would like to nominate an organisation with programs that are great examples of leading practice and would be of interest to the disability sector, please contact Kevin with their details and we will follow up personally with them.
