Art from the Margins (AFTM) was initiated in 2008 by Wesley Mission Brisbane/Albert Street Uniting Church. It has been established to encourage and assist people living with disadvantage who have an interest in expressing themselves through the arts.

Mission

AFTM aims to reduce the barriers between people living on the margins of society and mainstream people. Strategies for achieving this goal include:

  1. Promoting the artistic abilities of people living with disadvantage to enable further development of their artistic pursuits.
  2. Helping artists to acquire more confidence, enjoyment and recognition of their skills.
  3. Encouraging greater interaction among themselves and the wider public.

Associations

AFTM works collaboratively with RecLink Australia and other community and art organisations.

The Competition

Prior to inviting artists to exhibit in our forthcoming October Exhibition as part of the Brisbane Festival 2009, AFTM is conducting a design competition. In order to establish a permanent brand identifier, we now need a distinctive artistic logo.

The Design Brief

  1. Design a simple visually attractive logo that reflects the mission of Art from the Margins.
  2. Submitted designs must be the original artwork of the entrant.
  3. It would be useful to explain the meaning of the design in not more than 100 words.
  4. The logo may be in black and white or colour.
  5. The original artwork needs to be presented unfolded on A4 white paper 100 - 150gms weight. A4 size photographs are also acceptable provided they are of your original work. Each work must be presented in a transparent plastic cover.
  6. Media used for the design should be of professional quality.

Submission

Entries are to be posted. Postmark is to be no later than 13th March 2009. Address:

Art from the Margins Logo Competition, PO Box 24, Coorparoo, Qld. 4151.

Judging

A suitably qualified judging panel will be appointed by AFTM. The panel’s decision will be final. Entries will be judged no later than 31st March 2009 and the winner will be announced shortly afterwards.

Prize

A prize of $1,000.00 will be awarded to the winner. The prize includes the consideration for the assignment of copyright to Wesley Mission Brisbane.

Conditions of Entry

  1. Each artist may submit up to three entries.
  2. Works eligible for the winning prize should be in accordance with the design brief.
  3. Artists are required to complete the enclosed entry form and submit it with their works. If submitting more than one work, each piece is to be numbered.
  4. The winner agrees to assign the copyright of the winning design in perpetuity and free of royalty payments to the Uniting Church Property Trust Q, trading as Wesley Mission Brisbane and to sign any documents which may be required to confirm that assignment.
  5. Preference will be given to artists living with disadvantage.
  6. The winner accepts that changes to the initial design may have to be made. This will be effected in consultation between the winner and the AFTM committee.
