Largest ever Special Olympics held in the southern hemisphere

Newcastle is gearing up for the opening of the Special Olympics 2013 Asia Pacific Games at Hunter Stadium on Sunday 1 December 2013. 

The Games includes over 5000 volunteers. With 2500 athletes with an intellectual disability competing in sports like Cricket, Basketball, Football, Bocce, Athletics and more Newcastle will be the largest ever Special Olympics held in the southern hemisphere.

Over 400 Aussies will join athletes from 32 countries across the Asia Pacific including teams from as far as Pakistan, China, Japan, Korea and teams closer to home from across the Pacific Islands Tonga, Samoa and Papua New Guinea. The games are a celebration of ability.
