The national premiere of ABC Open projects with people with disabilities from regional Australia help kicked off events for the International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD).

To celebrate IDPwD, Nican and ABC Open partnered to invite people living with disabilities in regional Australia to contribute to The Moment Behind The Photo project, which brought people together to tell the stories behind photos that mattered to them.

ABC Open producers across regional Australia hosted digital storytelling workshops with a range of disability organisations, including working closely with Australian Disability Enterprises.  Contributors share self-confidence in who they are and enthusiasm to take on new challenges, including the art of digital storytelling through ABC Open.

The showreel of these stories were introduced this morning by Illawarra ABC Open Producer, Sean O'Brien. Sean has had a rich and distinguished career as a radio and online journalist and documentary producer. As an ABC Open producer he shares his digital storytelling skills with community contributors in the Illawarra and Southern Highlands.

Nican executive director Suzanne Bain-Donohue said: "It's been great to work with Sean and ABC Open on this innovative approach that enables people with disabilities to tell their own stories as part of this year's IDPwD.

There has been a process of discovery involved in using this format to support people to talk about how they are living their lives, discovering their passions and breaking down barriers large and small in their communities.  We congratulate the people with disabilities who told their stories as well as the many ABC Open Producers involved".

Over 60 contributions made by people living with disabilities were made to The Moment Behind The Photo project in October and November this year. All of the stories can be viewed the ABC Open website - abc.net.au/open

The launch also saw ACT Minister for Community Services, Joy Burch MLA unveil the IDPwD Celebration Pass for 2011 funded by the ACT Government which is providing over $230,000 in free offers and discounts for people with disabilities and carers on or around the International Day.  The Pass will encourage ACT businesses and venues to open doors to people with disabilities, families and carers on the period around the 3 December.

The International Day of People with Disability falls on 3 December 2011 and the Australian Government is working with Nican, a leading disability organisation on the Day.   Hundreds of events are taking place around Australia - visit www.idpwd.com.au or call 1800 440 385.
