The Paralympics start with a spectacular opening ceremony

The opening ceremony kicked off the 2012 Paralympics in London in style overnight.  The Australian team was led out to a noisy welcome by wheelchair rugby player, Greg Smith. Australia has 161 athletes competing in the games.

The biggest reception was received by the Great Britain team as a roar erupted in the stadium as they entered.

The 80,000 strong crowd were all given an apple when they entered the stadium and told not to eat it! The crunch of the apples became an interesting and integral component of the crowd participation in the ceremony.

Over 4200 athletes from 166 countries will compete in this year's games.  Of course, we at Nican will be barracking loudly for the Australians.
