Over $235,000 on offer as local attractions open doors for International Day of People with Disability

Nican is helping Canberra celebrate the UN International Day of People with Disability in style, with discounts valued at more than $235,000 being offered by venues across Canberra.

The 2011 Nican International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) Celebration Pass was officially launched by ACT Minister for Disability, Housing and Community Services, Joy Burch MLA,  this mornong at the ACT Legislative Assembly Reception Room.

400 Celebration Passes will be distributed to people with disability in Canberra in the lead-up to IDPwD on Saturday, 3 December.

Nican Executive Director Suzanne Bain-Donohue said: "The idea is to encourage local businesses and venues to break down barriers to people with disabilities, families and carers on the period around the 3 December, as well as to support people to get out and enjoy their day.

"These offers also recognise the extra costs involved for some people who travel with companions and we hope there will be a ripple effect across the whole year.

"Last year we successfully leveraged $118,000 of support from local businesses and in 2011  over $235,000 worth of discounts and savings have been committed. We'd like to thank our sponsors for such a great response as well as Disability ACT for their funding support.

"There are some great offers - Club Lime, Cockington Green, Questacon, the National Zoo & Aquarium, the National Gallery of Australia, mpowerdome, the Museum of Australian Democracy, Limelight Cinemas and Dendy Cinemas have all been very generous in supporting the Celebration Pass.

"By doing so, these local businesses are standing up for a more inclusive society and are demonstrating that access for all is important for building better communities".

This event will coincide with the National premiere of the Nican and ABC Open project "The Moment Behind the Photo." To celebrate IDPwD, Nican and ABC Open partnered to invite people living with disabilities in regional Australia to contribute to The Moment Behind The Photo project, which brought people together to tell the stories behind photos that mattered to them.

The International Day of People with Disability falls on 3 December 2011 and the Australian Government is working with Nican, a leading disability organisation on the Day.   Hundreds of events are taking place around Australia - visit or call 1800 440 385.
