The Board and staff of Nican would like to offer our condolences to the family of Hazel Hawke.

It was announced last night that Mrs Hawke has passed away following a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

In 1988 the Commonwealth Bicentennial Authority not only set out to involve Australians in events, they also wanted to create community based activities and projects that would leave lasting and worthwhile memorials.

Nican, which supports inclusive recreation for Australians of all abilities, was one of those initiatives and was launched by Mrs Hawke in 1988.

We mark our 25th Anniversary next week.

We join other Australian's in remembering the life of a down to earth, respected and dignified woman who cared deeply about the community sector and the welfare of others.
