Riding for the Disabled Association of Western Australia Inc

Acronym:
RDAWA

Riding for the Disabled provides horse riding and associated activities as a pleasurable form of physical exercise which can therapeutically assist people with disabilities, including intellectual, specific learning, injuries resulting from accidents, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, muscular dystropy, multiple sclerosis, down syndrome, visual and hearing impairments, autism and amputees. There are 14 RDA centres within Western Australia, which caters for people of all ages. Our aim is to provide the opportunity to experience enjoyment, challenge and a sense of achievement through participation in horse riding activities, resulting in the development of life skills, improving quality of life and the attainment of personal goals. Horse riding promotes fun, freedom and fitness as well as aiding coordination and balance, stimulates the mind and circulation, and improves muscle tone and relaxation. It also assists greatly in the development of self confidence, self esteem, communication skills, leadership and trust and psychologically enables the rider to feel independent. A developing area of RDA is Hippotherapy in which a team under the supervision of a physiotherapist or occupational therapist uses the horse as a tool to achieve medical goals for the individual person. To find your nearest centre write or telephone us - or ask at your local public library.
