FREE Coach'n'Play to celebrate International Day for People with DisAbility

Mark Buttifant

On Saturday, December 3, 2005 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, NetSports hosted a special event at Nunawading Community Centre to encourage participation in tennis by people with a disability. There were 6 specialist tennis coaches in attendance to improve tennis skills, matchplay, round robin competitions, ITN assessments, prizes, giveaways, BBQ and refreshments.

Despite Melbourne's weather being typically unpredictable and cool, we were pleased to have over 20 people in attendance and they all seemed enthusiastic to continue their involvement into a weekly social tennis competition.

After much consultation and encouragement from specialist disability agencies, ERLS, VICSRAPID, Wheelchair Sports Victoria and Special Olympics, NetSports decided to use this day to launch a unique and exciting tennis competition specifically designed for people with a DisAbility. This competition will commence on February 18-19 2006 and will include competitions involving wheelchair tennis and programs for people with an intellectual disability.

NetSports has established itself as the leader in the management and provision of social tennis competitions for able-bodies participants, with over 2000 participants involved in a typical season. And now many of the key features from these competitions will be available for people with a disability, including:

  • Comprehensive website featuring photo gallery, upcoming social events including regular BBQ's
  • Fixtures/results/ladders information updated daily giving full information for all participants
  • TRIP: Tennis Reward Incentive Program...the more you play, the more rewards you earn.
  • Weatherline: dedicated message service which will advise players if rain is likely to affect play
  • Fill-In support: all players receive full assistance in finding replacement players if they cannot play a particular round.
