International Disability Day 2005, Tamworth

Jeanette Whaler

International Disability Day 2005 was celebrated in style at the Tamworth Community Centre.

A day of music, entertainment and fun activities was arranged and managed by a local committee headed by Centrelink's Community Disability Officer, Jeanette Whale.

Clients, their carers and families and community agencies escaped the heat to enjoy music and entertainment in the comfort of Community Centre.

It was a real community affair with assistance being given by high school students and various local services. Highlights included a very stylish display by a belly dancing class, disco music, piñatas and lucky door prizes.

Jeanette said her committee were very thankful for the level of community support which was given. We had numerous donations of refreshments, prizes and awards, and our Lions Club prepared a delicious lunch, she said.

It was a very relaxing and entertaining day, and one which certainly helped put the "Ability" back into disability. Jeanette's committee has been arranging this celebration for the last six years.
