Newell Advocacy Inc (NSW)

Citizen Advocacy is a movement which welcomes volunteers from the community and assists them to become advocates for people with intellectual disabilities on a one to one basis.A volunteer advocate supports a person with an intellectual disability and represents that person's interests and rights as if they were their own within the community. The Newell Advocacy office puts each volunteer in touch with an individual who has an intellectual disability, so that they can get to know each other and begin to develop a relationship which will enhance both their lives. This introduction follows a short orientation program where prospective advocates can meet each other, find out more about the program from the coordinators, and canvas the issues citizen advocacy addresses. The office will put the advocate in contact with all the relevant and appropriate resource people. Newell Advocacy also offers staff initiated or direct advocacy. This is of a short term crisis nature and the advocating is undertaken by a staff member on behalf of the individual with an disability.
