Get Involved In IDPwD ! !

Dear Nican Registered Organisation,

We are writing to you because you are registered on the Nican database and we would like to invite you to join us in celebrating the UN International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD).

IDPwD is an opportunity to acknowledge the talents of people with disabilities, to work to change attitudes and break down community barriers.  Nican has a history of working to support community activities on the International Day and are pleased that we have again been asked to take on a coordination role in the IDPwD which is funded by the Australian Government Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs.

We invite you to consider holding an event for this fantastic day and nothing is too big or too small. The registration process is easy, simply fill out this form.  Depending on the size and nature of your event, we can make available a selection of promotional products for your event free of charge while stocks last.  We have a range of products this year; balloons, lapel pins, posters, postcards, PC wallpapers and even convenor T-Shirts. Our stocks are limited so get your registrations in early.  Products will only be sent to organisations who have registered an event for the Day.

If you're stuck for ideas but really want to hold an event, we have an events toolkit which we can send to you via email. The toolkit contains; tips, tools, ideas for schools, businesses, and government, help for event organisers including how to put together an accessible event. Please contact us at the email below for a copy of the event toolkit.

There will be numerous public events happening all across Australia, so if you decide not to hold your own event, have a look on the website for an event in your area.

As part of the International Day celebrations we are also on the lookout for people with a disability who wish to be provide stories to be considered for Breaking Down the Barriers. Breaking Down the Barriers is dedicated to sharing the stories of people with a disability who are committed to overcoming obstacles. These profiles are open to everyone so please contact us if you know anyone who has overcome challenges relating to their disability within their lives or broken down barriers in their community. No matter how small a contribution may seem, every story is important for communities as a whole.

In addition, regional people with disability are invited to share stories through a project offered through ABC Open and supported by Nican for IDPwD.  ABC Open invites people from the regions to tell their stories, using words, photos, video and sound. The new ABC Open project, The Moment Behind the Photo, is now open and, as part of IDPwD will be highlighting contributions from people with disabilities on any subject.  The idea is simple - find a personal photo which means something to you and share it online, with a text description, or with audio. Maybe you vividly remember the moment the photo was taken, or what was happening outside the frame, or maybe the photo speaks volumes about a particular time in your life. ABC Open producers work in regional centres around Australia to help people learn the skills to get involved. If you or your organisation would like to be part of ABC Open and share your stories through the ABC go to www.abc.net.au/open, find the regions section and look up your local ABC Open producer.
