International Day of People with Disability

2013 marks the year that International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) celebrates a milestone achievement - 21 years of raising awareness and promoting an understanding of people with disability.

This year Nican is encouraging local communities, organisations and businesses to get onboard and join in the coming of age celebrations.

Nican Executive Director Suzanne Bain-Donohue said communities across Australia could celebrate by hosting their own IDPwD events on 3 December with the theme of a 21st birthday celebration.

"I encourage communities to start planning and thinking how they will celebrate this occasion," Ms Bain-Donohue said.

"There are many reasons to celebrate the achievements we have made together to improve access, services and inclusivity for people with a disability over the past 21 years and ways we can work together to continue improvements in these areas."

"While the celebrations will provide a chance for communities to reflect on the achievements over the last two decades, it will also be an opportunity to talk about what can be done to build a more inclusive Australia into the future."

Events can be registered through www.idpwd.com.au and registered events will receive merchandise to help make their event a great celebration.

Organisers of events will find helpful tips and tools on www.idpwd.com.au or, if you are not one to throw a party, log on to find the details of the closest celebrations in your area.

Registrations are open until 10 November 2013.
